  • The basic structure of 2048 is remarkably straightforward. The player begins with a four-by-four grid containing a small number of tiles. Most versions begin with two tiles, usually containing the numbers 2 or 4.

    The player can move the tiles up, down, left, or right. Whenever two tiles with the same value collide during a move, they merge into one tile with double the value. For example, two 2 tiles become a 4, two 4 tiles become an 8, and two 16 tiles become a 32.
